1. What is a QEEG brain map and why is it the first step in neurofeedback?

Every brain produces rhythmic electrical patterns called brain waves. A qEEG brain map (often called a “Q”) records these patterns to show your unique strengths and weaknesses—areas with too much or too little activity, or areas not coordinating well. This information helps us design a personalized neurofeedback training program and track your progress.

The process is completely non-invasive and painless. You wear a sensor cap that only records your brain’s electrical output; nothing is sent into the brain.

2. How is a qEEG brain map different from an EEG?

An EEG (electroencephalograph) uses surface sensors to detect brain waves and shows brain activity in real time. Unlike MRIs or CAT scans, which show structure, an EEG shows function—how you are feeling moment to moment.

A qEEG (quantitative EEG) adds detailed neurometric readings to identify abnormal activity, predict symptoms, and track progress with precision. It provides information about brainwaves, amplitude, location, coherence (communication between regions), phase (thinking speed), and network integration.

3. What is LoRETA and how does it enhance brain mapping?

LoRETA (Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography) uses a 19-sensor cap and software to image and train brainwave patterns in deeper brain structures. This 3D neurofeedback approach allows training of entire brain networks as a unit, often reducing the number of sessions needed.

4. Is brain mapping reliable?

Yes. qEEG brain mapping is a well-established tool in neuroscience. It’s widely used in research worldwide to study ADHD, autism, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, anxiety, learning disabilities, and many other conditions.

5. Why should I do a qEEG for neurotherapy?

qEEG-based neurofeedback has been shown to be more effective than standard approaches. Studies comparing standard protocols to qEEG-customized programs found:

7. What Happens after my qEEG?

After your qEEG is completed, our Board Certified qEEG Diplomate, Lorraine Morrow, (one of only 11 in Texas) will analyze the raw EEG data alongside your clinical information and provide a report, typically within 7 business days.

In total, this process enables us to develop a personalized treatment plan whether that entails neurofeedback, EMDR, photobiomodulation or any of our other services we provide.

8. What Happens Once My qEEG Results Are Discussed?

If you’re not ready for neurofeedback: There’s no obligation to proceed. The qEEG is a powerful standalone assessment that provides valuable information for understanding symptoms, refining treatment approaches, and enhancing performance.

If you’re interested in pursuing neurofeedback: A qEEG is required before starting neurofeedback training, as it determines your treatment protocols. If you decide to pursue neurofeedback with Houston Brain Center, our office will schedule your first appointment, and you’ll begin your journey towards better brain health. Typically, clients complete 3-4 protocols of neurofeedback training at a rate of 2x/week in order to achieve the results they seek. These sessions can be scheduled:

Back to back training sessions on one day
One session on two separate days
Brain Intensive(typically offered during school holidays such as spring break) - two back to back sessions a day, for 5 days in a row, thus completing a protocol or 10 sessions.

If you are unable to come in person, we do offer remote training. Please call our office for more information.

Everyone responds differently, so some people may need more protocols. We conduct a follow-up qEEG after every two protocols to see how the brain is improving in response to the training.
