A Comprehensive Guide to Your First Few Appointments at Houston Brain Center

Writer: Briana JohnsonBriana Johnson

At Houston Brain Center, we understand that every brain is unique, and we take a personalized approach to patient care. Here’s what you can expect during your first few appointments:

Step 1: Neurological Comprehensive Evaluation (Part 1)

Your first visit will be with our Board-Certified Neurotherapist, Lorrianne Morrow. During this session, which may be virtual, she will take the time to understand your concerns, review your health history, and discuss your goals. We may also recommend additional assessments, such as neurotransmitter and stress hormone tests or a BrainSpan evaluation, to support your overall brain health. You can expect this session to last approximately 30-60 minutes.

If this appointment is for your child, most of the time will be spent gathering clinical information from you, the parents. Many parents prefer to speak with the clinician privately, but if your child is comfortable discussing their concerns, our clinician will make time for this during the appointment.

Step 2: Conducting an EEG (Part 2)

As part of your evaluation, we will conduct an Electroencephalogram (EEG)—a non-invasive procedure that provides valuable insights into brain function and activity. This detailed analysis helps us identify patterns related to cognitive functions such as: ADHD, slow processing speed, anxiety, peak performance, ASD bio marker, sleep issues, and more.

The EEG will be conducted  in-person in any of our office locations. You can expect this session to last approximately 45-60 minutes.

💡 qEEG vs. EEG: While EEG and qEEG are sometimes used interchangeably, qEEG is an advanced form of EEG that analyzes brain activity in more detail, identifying patterns and irregularities for a deeper understanding of brain function, and data collected during the EEG.

Step 3: EEG Analysis and Report

After your qEEG is completed, our Board Certified qEEG Diplomate, Lorraine Morrow, (one of only 10 in Texas) will analyze the raw EEG data alongside your clinical information and provide a report, typically within 7 business days.

In total, this process enables us to develop a personalized treatment plan whether that entails neurofeedback, EMDR, photobiomodulation or any of our other services we provide.

Step 4: What Happens Next?

  • If you’re not ready for neurofeedback: There’s no obligation to proceed. The qEEG is a powerful standalone assessment that provides valuable information for understanding symptoms, refining treatment approaches, and enhancing performance.

  • If you’re interested in pursuing neurofeedback: A qEEG is required before starting neurofeedback training, as it determines your treatment protocols. If you decide to pursue neurofeedback with Houston Brain Center, our office will schedule your first appointment, and you’ll begin your journey towards better brain health. Typically, clients complete 3-4 protocols of neurofeedback training at a rate of 2x/week in order to achieve the results they seek. These sessions can be scheduled :

    • Back to back training sessions on one day

    • One session on two separate days

    • Brain Intensive(typically offered during school holidays such as spring break)

      • Two back to back sessions a day, for 5 days in a row, thus completing a protocol or 10 sessions.

Everyone responds differently, so some people may need more protocols. We conduct a follow-up qEEG after every two protocols to see how the brain is improving in response to the training.
