Exploring the Role of EEGs in Psychiatry: A Paradigm Shift Towards Precision Medicine

At Houston Brain Center, we are committed to staying at the forefront of innovative approaches in mental health treatment. Recently, Lorrianne Morrow, LPC-S, BCN, QEEG-DL, NASM-CPT, was published as the second author of a groundbreaking article titled "Evidentiary Significance of Routine EEG in Refractory Cases: A Paradigm Shift in Psychiatry." This article delves into the transformative potential of EEGs (electroencephalograms) in revolutionizing psychiatric care.

Over the past decade, traditional methods of prescribing psychiatric medications based solely on presenting symptoms have been increasingly questioned. Leading institutions, including the National Institute of Mental Health and the World Psychiatric Association, have called for a paradigm shift toward precision medicine. This study answers that call, providing compelling evidence for integrating EEGs into psychiatric practice.

In collaboration with a large psychiatric practice, the study analyzed EEGs from 1,233 patients over several years. The findings identified four EEG biomarkers associated with medication failure in refractory patients: focal slowing, excessive beta spindling, encephalopathy, and isolated epileptiform discharges. These biomarkers point to underlying brain dysregulation, often missed by traditional psychiatric assessments, and may explain previous medication failures.

What makes this research significant is its potential to pave the way for personalized medicine in psychiatry. By utilizing EEG biomarkers, clinicians can gain deeper insights into the neurophysiological underpinnings of psychiatric disorders, guiding more targeted and effective treatment approaches. As Lorrianne and her co-authors note, "testing the organ we are trying to treat" is a crucial step toward optimizing patient outcomes.

Lorrianne Morrow brings her extensive expertise as a board-certified Neurotherapist (BCIA), QEEG Diplomate, and NASM Certified Personal Trainer to her neurotherapy practice, underscoring a commitment to holistic mental health care. Here at Houston Brain Center, we believe in a comprehensive approach that addresses emotional, mental, physiological, psychosocial, and behavioral needs. Lorrianne specializes in combining Neurofeedback training with mental health treatment to enhance brain function and alleviate mood issues such as anxiety, depression, OCD, and ADHD.

Before establishing her practice, Lorrianne gained experience in various mental health settings, including private clinics and hospitals. Her academic background includes a B.A. Magna Cum Laude in Psychology and Sociology from Texas A&M University and an M.A. Summa Cum Laude in Clinical Psychology from the University of Houston Clear Lake. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Psychophysiology, Lorrianne remains dedicated to advancing mental health through research and practice.

Lorrianne’s research on EEGs in refractory psychiatric cases represents a significant advancement in the quest for precision medicine. By integrating EEG biomarkers into clinical practice, we can unlock new possibilities for understanding and treating complex psychiatric conditions. Lorrianne is the proud owner of both LG Counseling and Houston Brain Center, where we empower clients to achieve optimal mental wellness through innovative approaches like Neurofeedback and personalized treatment plans.
